Course: WBDG05Duration: 1.5 hour
Learning Units: 1.5 LU

Daylighting is the controlled admission of natural light into a space through windows to reduce or eliminate electric lighting. By providing a direct link to the dynamic and perpetually evolving patterns of outdoor illumination, daylighting helps create a visually stimulating and productive environment for building occupants, while reducing as much as one-third of total building energy costs. This course will provide you with an overview of the principals of daylighting and other topics that support effective daylighting design such as electric lighting controls, and sun control and shading devices.
Learning Objectives
By completing this course you will learn and be able to:
- Understand the benefits of effective daylighting.
- Describe 1-2 methods of construction that support effective daylighting design.
- Summarize at least one daylighting design strategy upon reviewing an example.
- List the types of electric lighting controls.
- Describe how sun control and shading devices support an effective daylighting strategy.
- List at least one daylighting requirement of Executive Order 13423 Technical Guidance—Daylighting section.
